In Fourth Succession War, some battles were not as one-sided as the Davion propaganda made it seem.
On Tikonov, the 7th Crucis Lancers found themselves in a hornet's nest when they dropped into the Earthwerks factory complex...
11 October 3028
Industrial Sector, Tikograd
Tikonov, Capellan Confederation
“Amber One! Amber One! Amber Three-Three! Hostiles dropping into the Earthwerks Complex! I have at least a dozen contacts inbound!”
“This is Amber One. Copy Amber Three-Three. All Ambers, converge at point Echo Six and engage.” Major Wedgwood swung the head of her Highlander about and began to trot the massive war machine towards the hulking mass of the factory. For the past hour and a half, Colonel Ridzik’s forces, her Hamilton Highlanders, and the remnants of the Tikograd Militia had been battling the 6th and 8th Crucis Lancers street-to-street in the industrial sector, their tenacious tactics and knowledge of the narrow streets and cavernous warehouses bogging down the Davion offense. Now, more forces were dropping in her rear. The radio quickly became a mass of confused signals.
“Amber Two-Four, I have three hostile heavies at the southw…”
“Amber Four-Three to Amber Four-One <static>on the roof. I see at least one Valk and a Pixie…”
“Eeeeeyah!!! <static> AAAGH!”
Wedgwood came around the corner of a warehouse to a massive firefight unfolding. At least a half-dozen green-painted ‘Mechs had landed in the open space outside of the open main factory exit doors and were laying down a murderous fire on the first few Highlander ‘Mechs on the scene. But the Highlanders were scoring hits of their own; Wedgwood watched a Davion Dervish explode in a spectacular fireball as autocannon slugs found a missile bin. The militia Urbanmech that felled the Dervish was cut down fractions of a second later by a laser blast from the roof of the complex and toppled to the side, smoke pouring from every side.
“Amber One to Amber Recons. Anybody who can, get to the roof and engage.” A Davion Crusader turned toward her and launched a flurry of missiles. Wedgwood lurched backwards, and the missiles sprayed brickwork and ferrocrete shards across the pavement as they spent themselves on the warehouse wall and street below. “Amber One-Four, jam what transmissions you can.” The experimental countermeasures suite on the Raven was short-ranged but it might help…
The priority channel beeped and Wedgwood switched the com.
“Highlander One Actual to Amber One.” Colonel Sellers, the Highlander Commanding Officer, was monitoring the situation from Ridzik’s command center. “Hostiles are attempting to break through and are inbound to your location. ETA four minutes. Militia engaging and will attempt to delay.”
“Amber One, copy that, Highlander One.” Great. Just great.
“Major! The doors!” Amber One-Three’s shouted report a heartbeat later broke Wedgwood’s reverie. She quickly moved the upper part of the Highlander around the corner; the massive doors of the Earthwerks factory were slowly closing.
With the Davions inside.
“All Amber ground units. Take down those doors; we’re going in!”
“For the Chancellor!”
*************************
To prevent Colonel Ridzik from destroying the military industries of Tikograd
which included some twenty weapons factories and the Earthwerks BattleMech Factory, the Marshals of the Crucis Lancers developed a risky plan but one that showed promise. The morning of October 11 the Sixth and Eighth Crucis Lancers attempted feints to draw attention away from the real thrust of the new assault by the Seventh Crucis Lancers. Poor performance, coordination, and execution of all phases almost ruined everything.
Tipped off by the change in targets and an assault that started two hours before it
was supposed to, Colonel Ridzik was not fooled and repositioned several companies of his force based on a suspicion that the industrial sector was about to be hit. Just as Colonel Ridzik was about to order his troops to begin destroying the factories; the first 'Mechs of the Seventh Lancers hit their drop zones. The Sixth and Eighth Lancers, realizing that the timing was off and that the diversion had not worked, turned from the other sections of the city to protect the Seventh from Hamilton's Highlanders.
The drop of the Seventh Crucis Lancers was going badly. The whole 'Mech
regiment was supposed to land near the Earthwerks factory in the southeastern corner of the industrial section but Liao fighters and poor atmospheric conditions scattered the regiment. Only Bravo Company, First Battalion of the Seventh Lancers, dropped in and around the 'Mech factory, right in the middle of the First Company of the Hamilton Highlanders. Bravo Company managed to fight their way through the Highlanders and into the factory where it became a desperate bid to hold on and survive until reinforcements came…
