The assault by Wolf’s Dragoons on Hesperus II bogged down quickly when the Lyran defenders established a strong line of resistance along a natural terrain obstacle, the kilometer-wide Erewhon River. The Dragoons pushed several very costly underwater assaults across the river but were repulsed each time by the tenacious Lyran defenders. With casualties mounting and morale plummeting, Colonel Jaime Wolf was desperate for a way to get his regiments across the river and moving toward the factories of Defiance Industries. After days of pouring over old Star League data, Captain Natasha Kerensky came up with the information needed: the location of an old fording route known as Tanda’s Crossing.
Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces had quickly recognized the strategic importance of such a valuable place and quickly erased every note of the existence of Tanda’s Crossing from every database and map they could, and soon after the beginning of the First Succession War the location of Tanda’s Crossing was forgotten by all but the most senior Lyran commanders. When the Dragoons had attacked the Lyran generals had placed only a lance of militia at the Crossing,
hoping to both keep it safe and not warn the Dragoons of its existence. Colonel Wolf immediately dispatced the Black Widow company to force the Crossing and capture the ford. After a circuitous route to avoid observation, the Widows attacked.
